Our first use of our Kenyon Grill was on Christmas Eve – we grilled an entire venison loin to perfection despite the frigid cold air temperatures with apple cider in the drip pan. The grill surface cleaned up well. I also got the grill cart, which was very easily assembled. Lastly, I interacted with customer service twice, and in each case, my issue (a question about shipping and a question about a discrepancy on pricing) was efficiently and completely addressed and in a friendly manner. Great product. Great company. I plan to get a built-in Kenyon for the roof deck of my city home.

2018…

is FINALLY here and it’s time to live up to those promises we made ourselves to eat healthier, workout (for real this time), look better and most importantly, feel better.  And it’s easier than ever to be super motivated when that first week of January rolls in. Literally everyone is pumped and Pinterest boards are chock full of recipes, but the real goal is to keep it going strong throughout the entire year.

With the right tools you can set yourself up for success to lead a healthier lifestyle instead of attempting that quick diet fix we all hope will work but never really does, at least not effectively.

Every new year is a chance to do better. Leave the old year behind and get started on your best year (yet)!

Maybe your reason is to fit into your favorite pair of jeans again because legging are not pants.  Maybe a health scare happened in your family making you realize how much better you can and absolutely should be doing for your own health. Maybe you just feel exhausted before the day even sets in.  Or maybe you just want to improve upon the healthy foundation you’ve already created.

Whatever your reason, here’s a few good ways to get started:

Drink Water 💦

Think you drink enough water? Think again. When it comes to optimal hydration, make sure to follow this simple rule:

Consume half your body weight in fluid ounces of H2O

Example: 150lbs = 75 fl oz

Often when our bodies are lacking water we feel hungrier. You may even find yourself eating far less once you become properly hydrated.

Does drinking water still feel like a chore even though you know the benefits? Infuse fruit like watermelon, strawberry or blueberries for a splash of flavor and touch of sweetness.

Still can’t seem to do it? Try cutting in a low sugar fruit juice, like apple or grape, with an 80:20 water to juice ratio. Or purchase a “timed” water bottle that keeps a book mark of how much you should drink every hour.

7-8 Hours of Sleep 💤

Set an alarm for 1 hour before your newly designated bedtime, say 9pm, to get your pre-sleep rituals started. Power down all electronics early to soothe your eyes before turning in as blue lights emitted from devices can have a major affect on our quality of sleep.

Having trouble falling asleep at night?

  • Drink hot herbal teas (like Chamomile or Kava) with honey and a slice of lemon. The lemon will aid in digestion so you’ll have a better start, ahem, to your morning and the herbs will help to calm your nervous system preparing your body for relaxation.
  • Stretching your hamstrings, back and shoulders nightly will help release tension built up from your busy day and will signal your body to shut down, helping you fall into a regenerative sleep.
  • Make sure your room is set to a cooler temperature during the night. Put the thermostat on a schedule so this automatically happens.
  • Try a series of 10 second deep breathing intervals or listen to guided mediation/sleep music to lull yourself into a deep sleep.

“But it’s the weekend and I want to stay up late/wake up late!” Sure you could, but it won’t do you any good. As we grow older we realize our bodies thrive on a schedule. And you certainly can’t catch up on any missed sleep either. Too much sleep will make you feel groggy and lifeless and so will a lack of sleep. Aim for 7-8 hours of sleep each and every night, no more and no less.

Meal Planning and Shopping Lists 📝

Devise a meal plan in advance of the week ahead. Keep a magnetic notepad on the fridge detailing breakfast, lunch, snacks, dinner and dessert selections for the entire week. You can also keep a digital version of your list, but seeing it on the fridge helps my family to stick with the plan and stay on track together. Most importantly this method minimizes food waste and we purchase only what we need on a given weekly basis.

Plan ahead and you’ll never find yourself asking “What’s for Dinner tonight?”

Once you’ve made your food plan of attack, go through each section and make a shopping list of all the ingredients you’ll need for every meal. Incorporate several of the same ingredients throughout the week to get the most out of your food and your budget (like proteins, salad, rice, fruit, vegetables, and eggs). Prepare and cut-up whatever you can ahead of time so it’s easy to grab and go during the hectic week ahead.

Tip: Try methodically putting your shopping list in order based on the store’s layout so you’re in and out with ease and confidence that all items have been purchased. Start the list with foods from the Produce/Deli section and end with Frozen and Dairy isles.

Make sure you stick to the list And ALWAYS eat something before you go into the grocery store!

Grill Veggies and Proteins 🍗🍠

Cooking on your grill is a great way to transform healthy foods and proteins into the perfect plate that never feels like a comprise. If you have a Kenyon grill you can keep your grill indoors and accessible on the kitchen counter along with other appliances you’ll need to have ready on the quick, like a blender, so preparation of your meals and snacks will feel almost effortless.

Add an assortment of spices, rubs and marinades to your protein of choice before grilling. Spices can be nutritionally valuable while adding a burst of flavor. Choose fresh or dried spices or get creative and make your own blends to keep on hand. A winter favorite in our household is Tumeric which contains powerful anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, much needed during the cold and flu season.

Just Move It 💪

Dedicate a little time each day, at least 2o minutes, to some form of exercise. Invest in a pedometer to help keep you on track and accountable for your daily required movements,  I.E 10,000 steps per day! And if you sit at a desk all day long you know this is an especially vital habit to get your blood flowing and to boost your metabolism.

Don’t neglect strength training! Weight lifting doesn’t have to be intimidating. No, you don’t have to lift like you’re in competition with everyone else in the gym and yes, woman need to lift weights too.  After all, muscle burns fat!

Start with light weights or whatever weight level feels comfortable but with some added resistance. Slowly but surely increase the weight intervals or your reps as the weeks go on.  DO NOT try to be a hero and lift too much weight too fast or your muscles will pull and tear and soreness will slow you down if not stall your progress. Avoid injury but don’t avoid strength training!

If you find yourself still unsure where to start, schedule a few sessions with a personal trainer to get you going in the right direction. Working out at home?  Watch “how to videos” to make sure you are using correct form and posture. Or find a fitness-minded friend to workout with!

Now that you have a few solid basics down, set forth and be a better you!

“We travel constantly and most of the time stay in the city. One thing we have always had to leave at home is our flame grill. It’s huge and not allowed in any of the rentals and apartments we stay at anyway. Kenyon City Grills has changed all that and I don’t think we’ll ever need our flame grill! Kenyon City Grills are made in USA and are by far the most well-built grill (and the stand) we have ever seen or had the pleasure of using! My husband is extremely impressed and he’s not easily impressed.”

Everyone knows burgers are great on the grill and Kenyon Grills are no exception to that. Have you ever made breakfast entirely on your grill though?

The Kenyon City Grill is built like a boss and comes with two tops – grilling and a smooth griddle surface (shown above).

Cue the City Grill, bringing you the pleasure and fun of outdoor grilling inside your very own kitchen.

“I would highly recommend you invest in this grill if you live in any urban city with limited access to the outdoors. Being able to have freshly grilled food without dealing with the pain of grill pans or smoke has changed the way I grill.”

Kenyon City Grill Review: A versatile countertop grill fit for any grilling enthusiast.

Grilling is a fantastic way to prepare food. There’s just something about a nice grilled burger, steak, or even some hot dogs or smoked sausage. If your apartment complex doesn’t allow gas or charcoal grills, or if you are just looking for a compact, portable electric grill, there are options available! The Kenyon City Grill wants to take care of all of your countertop grilling needs.

Ease of Use

Using the grill is really pretty easy. To start, you’ll want to remove the grill plate, lift the heating element, and pour around 16oz of water or some other liquid into the drip tray. The main purpose of the liquid is to prevent any drippings from smoking, but you can also use the drip tray and its contents to infuse flavor into your food.

Once your tray has some liquid in it, replace the grill plate, plug in the grill, and turn the heat dial to its highest setting. Kenyon recommends leaving the grill at its highest setting with the lid down for at least 10 minutes to preheat before turning it to your desired normal temperature for cooking. After preheating, turn the heat dial to your desired level, place your food on the grill, and get cooking!

BBQ for all! The electric Kenyon City Grill lets apartment dwellers in on the fun

The Kenyon City Grill aims to excel where other electric grills falter. It promises high, even heat, a virtually smokeless cooking experience, portability, versatility, and both indoor and outdoor functionality. We took one on a test drive to find out if it could deliver on the promise of fire-grilled results without the fuss of flame.

The Kenyon City Grill begs a premium price, and delivers performance to match. As unapologetic arbiters of grilled goodness, we will never forsake the fierce flavor that can only come from fire, but for those faced with a conundrum of carcinogenic proportions, the Kenyon City Grill serves up a foundation of flavor which so closely mimics the real thing, you might forget you never lit a match.

Chef Wil Gilson introduces us to what could be your new favorite grilling recipe for the summer with his Grilled Marinated Beef Short Ribs.  This summer, we teamed up with Yankee Magazine and well-known Boston Chef Wil Gilson for this new favorite summer grilling recipe.

Chef Gilson’s Grilled Marinated Beef Short Ribs recipe is uniquely New England with a special ingredient. Read on for his easy and tasty recipe plus some quick grilling tips from the chef himself.

  • “The goal of great grill marks is to make diamonds so clear that Elizabeth Taylor would be jealous.” –Chef Gilson
  • The key to getting the best grill marks is to start with a very hot grill. Set the meat on the grill for 2 minutes and then turn the meat at a 90-degree angle. Picture it this way: treat the grill like a clock-face. Start with the tip of the meat facing 2 o’clock. Then turn that tip to face 10 0’clock.
  • Quick cooking meats (like pork chops, chicken tenders, steak tips, and Korean short beef ribs) cook beautifully on electric grills like the City Grill because of the grill’s high heat and its non-stick surface.
  • Delicate proteins like swordfish, salmon, and tuna can easily come apart on a traditional grill. Use a fish spatula and wait for the fish to become firm before flipping. Electric grills with their non-stick surface are ideal for grilling fish—the fish is not likely to stick to the grate, giving you a fully intact piece filet of salmon for dinner.
  • Be aware of grilling sugary sweet glazed meats. People love to slather their meats with a sugary sauce before putting it on the grill. When working over a propane or charcoal grill, this can lead to burnt meats. But with an electric grill with a non-stick surface and quick cooking meats, your meats will not stick or burn.

Grilled Marinated Beef Short Ribs

Yield: 4-6 servings
Total time: 4 hours
Active time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

5 lbs. Korean-style beef short ribs*
1 bunch Thai basil, picked leaves, half reserved for garnish
1 bunch cilantro, picked leaves, half reserved for garnish
1 cup maple syrup
1 cup soy sauce
½ cup red wine (or water)
¼ cup balsamic vinegar
1 bunch scallions, sliced finely
2 tablespoons peeled and chopped ginger
4 tablespoons minced garlic
1 jalapeno, diced or sliced finely

Directions

Place beef short ribs in a freezer bag or a plastic tub that can be sealed (you may need to separate the ribs from one another depending on how they are packed). Put a layer of picked herb leaves on top of the ribs. Flip the ribs over and place more herbs on the other side. The ribs should have fresh herbs on the bottom and the top now.

Combine the remaining ingredients for the marinade in a bowl and whisk together. Pour the marinade over the ribs and allow them to marinate for at least 3 hours or overnight in the refrigerator.

Heat your electric grill to a medium-high heat. Remove the ribs from the marinade and place on a rack to let them drain any excess marinade. Grill ribs for 4-5 minutes per side. Garnish with basil and cilantro leaves.

*Korean-style short ribs can be found at most Asian markets. The cut refers to a strip of beef cut across the bone from the chuck end of the short ribs. Unlike American short ribs, which are best for braising and include a thick slice of bone-in beef, Korean-style short ribs are cut lengthwise across the rib bones. The result is a thin strip of meat, about 8 to 10 inches in length, lined on 1 side with 1/2-inch thick rib bones. The thin slices make for fast cooking on the grill.
